Netbeans Add/Open File/Folder Dialog becoming slow

The past couple of days, I've had the problem with netbeans file open dialog,
(the dialog that is used when opening a project or adding a library looking
for file or folders. I have absolutely no Idea where this issue has come
from, I've tried both a clean install of the JRE and JDK and netbeans itself
but to no avail the problem has not gone away. I've even tried increasings
the JVM heapsize for netbeans but no luck there either.
I've killed off extra processes on the system taking away possible resources
that also did nothing.

Im really lost on this one any help would be much appreciated

Thanks for taking the time to read

Hi there,

It has to be something that has been updated recently and is somehow
conflicting
with NetBeans for some reason. I have had some issues with programs trying
to
access the A: drive while there was nothing in it. That creates a
considerable
slowdown as well. Beyond that I would recommend deinstalling Launch4j and
see if
that helps. If that does not help, try JDK 5 and see if that helps. Also,
which
version of NetBeans are we talking about?

5.5 netbeans the one thats bundled with the JDK install file. As for drive A:
access I don't see any attempted drive activity to the floppy, saying it
might be something that has been updated recently im doubting slightly as
the install file for the jdk and netbeans is the one I used previously to
install the jdk and nb before and didn't have this issue till the past week.
How ever the JRE is auto updating on my system and I did the reinstall from
a newly downloaded version today.

I'll get rid of launch4j aside from that Im starting to think it may be an
issue with the JRE

Hi there,

That could be it, but normally NetBeans uses the JRE that is installed

JRE removed no Difference, luanch4j removed no difference :/
I just plain weird, the moment I choose anything that requires the file
selection dialog, such as open project java exe suddenly steals most of the
cpu resources then hangs there for 5-10 seconds, its the same when within
the file dialog I try to open another folder, Dunno if that suggests the
issue is with reading the content of a directory though.

Thanks for the help

This happens to me also- and i have installed netbeans5.5 on a brand new
computer (xp sp2) with nothing but netbeans installed and jdk1.6, i
uninstalled everything and rolled back to jdk1.5 and installed
netbeans5.5 again and still the long delay.

it seems to be something in netbeans (also note this happened in the
betas on my dev computer also).

Since it becomes a CPU hog, profiling information might give a clue. (I
don't know how to set that up for the currently running NB, but I'm sure
someone on this list could assist.)

In the last few days, I've started having the same problem. I can't be sure
since it has been a few days since I tried to add a new project. Selecting
"Open Project..." or seemingly just about any other file browser dialog will
apparently cause NetBeans to enter an infinite loop (or at least one that
takes more than an hour on a fast machine).

I am using Java 1.5.0_11-b03.

I found what was causing my problem. Nothing to do with Netbeans, but an
issue with Java 5. I had a shortcut to the desktop of my XP machine on my
desktop. This created the infinite loop.

In the last few days, I've started having the same problem. I can't be
sure since it has been a few days since I tried to add a new project.
Selecting "Open Project..." or seemingly just about any other file browser
dialog will apparently cause NetBeans to enter an infinite loop (or at
least one that takes more than an hour on a fast machine).
I am using Java 1.5.0_11-b03 and Netbeans 5.5.

Hi there,
It has to be something that has been updated recently and is somehow
conflicting
with NetBeans for some reason.

Subject: [nbusers] RE: RE: Netbeans Add/Open File/Folder Dialog becoming
slow
JDK 6 lastest files used for the fresh install. virus scanner was the
uptodate version of avg, but I killed it off when I tried it without
extranious processes running. Not a laptop, just gonna emphaise that this
has literally happend within the last couple of weeks and the only things
that have been installed recently have been the avg update and a copy of
luanch4j version 3

The past couple of days, I've had the problem with netbeans file open dialog,
(the dialog that is used when opening a project or adding a library looking
for file or folders. I have absolutely no Idea where this issue has come
from, I've tried both a clean install of the JRE and JDK and netbeans itself
but to no avail the problem has not gone away. I've even tried increasings
the JVM heapsize for netbeans but no luck there either.
I've killed off extra processes on the system taking away possible resources
that also did nothing.
Hello,

Are you seeing this behavior anywhere else besides NetBeans file
dialog? File dialogs in other software? Is Windows Explorer behaving
normally when you open up folders?

Thanks.

Hi...

Is it true that from java 1.6 all the api com.sun already will not exist
any more?
Compiling in java 1.6 the next warning appeared:
....Sun proprietary API and may be removed in a future release ...

for example:
com.sun.org.apache.xerces.internal.xni.parser.XMLDocumentSource
com.sun.image.codec.jpeg.JPEGImageEncoder

thanks!

This make sense since now JDK is open source, and I think that in new JDK
versions, the Sun proprietary API will be replaced by open sourced APIs.
BTW, is recommend use just default API, since if the user run your classes
on another VM, from IBM for example, is possible that this API are not
present.

As the warning says, the proprietary APIs ***may*** be removed. That
is as clear a message as possible that you should absolutely not be
using these APIs directly in your own application. Use the standard
(java.* and javax.*) APIs instead.

No other file dialogs outside of java based file dialogs(ie File Chooser)
Windows explorer is behaving fine. No external drives or installs recently
that would have put device drivers on the system

Check that you don't have a shortcut to your desktop in your desktop. This
was a problem in Java 5 and would cause Java to hang (or at least appear
to).

I had the same problem. The problem, as far as I understand from
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6317789 is a rather old
bug in JVM (or some WinAPI shell function, used from JVM). Archive files,
links to unavailable resources and maybe something else are causing this.
The solution is simple and has worked for me perfectly: clear your desktop.
